The Riverside Shipyards is a shortened name for the ground based San Francisco Fleet Yards Riverside Annex, sometimes nicknamed the Skunkworks. It was built in the mid-23rd century in part to honor the memory of George Kirk, a native of Riverside, Iowa who died on the USS Kelvin in 2233. As much of the information gleaned from the Kelvin's encounter with the 24th century Narada would later find its way into the technological leaps in ship design, it seemed a fitting location.
Being Starfleet's design and testing ground for advanced prototypes refits, and classified technological development, it has been the construction site for many of the most notable ships of the last decade, including the USS Constitution, USS Enterprise, and USS Venture Star DX-01.
After the destruction of a sizable portion of the fleet by the Narada in 2258, it has been undergoing an expansion as production ramps up to rebuild a diminished but re-emerging Starfleet.
