The USS Venture Star (otherwise known as the "Great Experiment") was the end-result of the Great Experiment Project begun in 2255.
While originally to be named Excelsior, it's designation was changed unexpectedly, presumably via the intervention of Admiral George Cash.
The Second USS Venture Star is a Venture Star-class "Heavy Cruiser" launched , 2258.

History
Inception
The First of it's class, The ship that became known as Venture Star was a very theoretical design as early as 2234. Although highly unique the design was thought to advanced and beyond the current state of technology. After the Events surrounding the destruction of the USS Kelvin by an unknown "highly advanced" Ship it was decided to press ahead with the preliminary project. Initially designed as a deterrent to both the Klingon and Romulan Empires, and many other unknown factors the ship was equipped with an advanced weapons and defense platform as well as advanced sensors and scientific facilities, many of which were derived from advanced classified research in conjunction with the new Constitution-class ships.
Design
Designed in part by Doctor Richard Thorndyke who completed theoretical work on the space frame and proved space worth of the design in 2240.Further work on the design would not continue until 2242 when advanced technological leaps in conjunction with the constitution class warranted re-opening of the project. The aim of the project to continue developing the radical technology started from sensor scans of an unknown vessel that allowed researchers to begin considering new ways of implementing technology that had never been considered before.
The first major developments to come out of the project was the development of a new type of Engine Nacelle and warp power reactor system. Developed in part by then third year engineering cadet George Rayburn the new design would allow the new ship to reach speeds unheard of in designs just freshly being constructed. Originally a supposed possible "Great Experiment" Venture Star is the largest most advanced ship in the fleet today. The aim of the single prototype is of an advanced technology Testbed and explorer.

Behind the Scenes
- The name "Venture Star" was originally made by the late brother of our EFCO, Alex Chadwick in 1987, to be used in a short story that he wrote at the time.
- There also came to be a project that bore a similiar name to this craft, VentureStar.
- Before it's final design, the new Venture Star ran through a series of designs ranging from one similar to the TOS Federation-class, to more standard Constitution-class equipped with a mission pod and a proto-Excelsior class before it was granted to Madman for design, in which case the design was refined into the current form.
